Romulus and DABBEL turned one of London’s most distinctive and architecturally unique buildings into “A Building of the Future”, a milestone in our journey to transform all existing commercial buildings environmentally efficient.
What’s the story of 30 Cannon Street?
30 Cannon Street, located in the heart of the City of London on the junction of Cannon Street and Queen Victoria Street is owned by Romulus, a London based workspace provider who own and manage over one million square feet of property across London and the USA.
30 Cannon Street attracts a variety of occupiers due to its unique design and central location. Built between 1974 and 1977, the building is in the spot where two churches once stood, the latter being designed by Sir Christopher Wren. The entire site was badly bombed during WW2 and was one of the last open spaces to be re-developed in post-war reconstruction. In 2016, Romulus carried out a complete refurbishment of 30 Cannon Street and today the building provides quality Grade A office space with an expansive 5th floor terrace and large roof garden with views across London. Prior to the works being carried out, Romulus and their team of architects had to consult with English Heritage due to the building being Grade II listed, meaning it is of significant historical importance. 30 Cannon Street was shortlisted for a RIBA London Regional Award in 2017.
Why is 30 Cannon Street environmentally efficient?
Whilst enjoying the views of St Paul’s Cathedral from 30 Cannon Street, occupiers can now also enjoy a comfortable and efficient working environment thanks to DABBEL AI controlling the HVAC system. In June 2021, DABBEL was installed at 30 Cannon Street completely remotely, with Romulus not required to pay any upfront costs. DABBEL AI works on pre-existing BMS (Building Management Systems) to manage and control HVAC consumption more efficiently based on a fully autonomous AI core. It independently and continuously makes optimal decisions to reduce energy consumption and CO₂ emissions. Within a month of installation, clients can see how much they have saved. As a result, to date DABBEL AI has helped save an average of 33% of HVAC energy consumption and 18.2t CO ₂ emissions at 30 Cannon Street.
More to come…
Romulus has been successfully developing and managing buildings in the UK and the US
A for over 40 years. The company’s key focus is on delivering a world-class experience for their occupiers and the local community, whilst ensuring their environmental impact is kept to a minimum. They plan to further reduce CO₂ emissions across their portfolio by installing sensors such as occupancy sensors which provide accurate data to DABBEL AI to achieve even better energy savings. And finally, to have more Romulus buildings equipped with DABBEL AI technology by the end of 2022.

Sustainable journey together with DABBEL
The UK government building regulations state that CO₂ emissions from new buildings must be reduced by around 27% from current standards, including offices and shops. This makes companies in the real estate and property investment sectors take action for any design, construction, and alteration of buildings to create a greener built environment, preparing for Future Homes and Buildings Standard in 2025. The government also said it was investing £6.6 billion into improving the energy efficiency of buildings.
Fighting climate control is a global emergency that has a direct impact on our lives. Romulus’ decision is pivotal in their mission to reduce carbon emissions whilst still ensuring occupier comfort. Together we create an environment that protects and improves climate and health.
If you’re up for a little adventure, go hiking in the woods of “Heart of England Forest” in Dorsington and look for the 30 Cannon Street tree. Over a lifetime of 100 years, one tree could absorb around a tonne of CO₂. In one year, a mature tree consumes 25kgs of CO₂. It sounds significantly low compared to what DABBEL and Romulus have achieved together, but the newly planted tree is a small part of the larger movements to stop climate change!
